Black History Month

Join us again in viewing the film Gurumbé: Afro-Andalusian Memories.

During Black History Month, the African Diaspora International Film Festival is offering virtual screenings of the groundbreaking documentary by Miguel Ángel Rosales. The work explores the role of slavery in Spain, as well as the New World, and how transatlantic crossings were part of the formation of flamenco. Viewers find interesting connections in music, dance, and history in the film, which travels from Spain across the Atlantic, and also into Africa.

One-week film rentals are available for $10. Get more information and purchase a rental at the film page on vimeo.com >>

If you miss this opportunity to watch the film online, then please consider visiting the Auburn Avenue Library, in downtown Atlanta. A Través donated a copy of Gurumbé to that library branch in 2018, along with our project partner, The Baton Foundation, as part of our series,  Flamenco and the African Diaspora.

If you attended our performances or classes during that series, you will recognize dancer Yinka Graves when you watch Gurumbé. She also visited Atlanta as part of our 2018 series, along with Rosales, to introduce audiences to the film. (Photo by Erik Voss at Red Light Café, Atlanta)

Are you an educator? We would like to hear from you!

We are taking a survey of teachers who would like to give us some ideas for our new video series for schools. You could tell us how you would use the videos, what you would like to see flamenco artists do in the videos, and who you think would watch them. Take our five-mnute survey via Survey Monkey >>

La Feria Atlanta TM 2020 postponed until 2021 http://www.atravesarts.comLa Feria Atlanta

Last year, we postponed the launch of La Feria Atlanta, due to the pandemic.  Now, we are hard at work putting together our plans for 2021. Please watch your inboxes for news about that event, happening in the Spring, as a celebration of our connection between flamenco in Atlanta and life in Andalucía.
